The Trumpet Major by Thomas Hardy

There was lively discussion around the Trumpet Major by Thomas Hardy at both the Ridgeway and the Roots reading groups...

A good start to the new season of the Ridgeway Reading Project saw both groups enjoying the Hardy novel The Trumpet Major:

Sutton Poyntz, Hardy's inspiration for Overcombe

Upwey Mill. Overcombe Mill in the Trumpet Major is thought to be combination of this mill and the one at Sutton Poyntz

Poxwell Manor, 'Oxwell Hall' the home of Squire Derriman

The session on Tuesday took place at the Keep Military Museum, many thanks go to the curator Chris Copson for the use of the library and the tour of the museum - it was very interesting to see the types of uniforms and weaponry used by characters in the novel. It is hoped to arrange a visit for the Sunday group in December.
